I believe the most important factor in therapy is the connection between a therapist and their client. This connection helps build trust in the relationship, which is vital for being able to share very personal information. It is my goal to help you feel safe when allowing yourself to be vulnerable.

A native of Homewood, Alabama, I earned degrees in Business and Law from the University of Alabama. I practiced law briefly in Birmingham before realizing that I wanted to help people in a different way. I completed my undergraduate classwork in psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park and then earned my doctorate in clinical psychology from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Along the way, I completed an internship at the University of South Florida and then an externship in neuropsychology at Tampa General Hospital. I completed my postdoctoral residency at Vanderbilt University, where I worked for 10 years, leaving as an Associate Director. I moved back to Birmingham to be closer to my family.

I have been in private practice in Birmingham since 2013. I’m a generalist, but specialize in anxiety disorders, including performance anxiety, phobias, PTSD and other trauma-related disorders. I use my training in business and law to understand complex situations my clients may find themselves in.

Mindfulness

I also practice mindfulness meditation. It helps me to let go of the inevitable suffering that comes with living life these days. Mindfulness is an evidence-based technique that was developed thousands of years ago. More recently, science has shown that it can lead to changes in functioning and can be very effective in dealing with anxiety and depressed mood. I know it’s not for everyone, but if you’re interested in trying it out, I can help you learn to stay in the moment, since most of our anxiety and suffering comes from worrying about what has happened in the past and what we worry will happen in the future.
